What I do while on the radio.

I enjoy every aspect of this great hobby.  I love cw and ssb but operate mostly digital modes now.  I like chasing after awards but I really enjoy a good ragchew.  I also like to contest but do not get to as much as I would like due to my work schedule.  If you would like to make a sked please email me at kc5ypu@kc5ypu.net.

Working the digital modes

Picture
Digital modes are fun and do not require an elaborate setup.  I operate all digital modes with a power output of 5 to 35 watts, except rtty and cw in  which i run 100 watts with these two modes.  My station is minimal but I have great success with it.  Please remember to make sure your alc is set so it does not move during transmit.

Instead of writing about them I am going to provide you with some links for you learning pleasure.

WB8NUT - Good info on all the different modes, plus it gives you audio samples so you can hear what the sound like.
W1HKJ - FLdigi's website page that contains more audio samples and what each mode looks like on the waterfall.
G4UCJ - Very informative website.
TIPS- Links to a pdf file with good info on operating psk
G0HWC - Very good information and lots of good sstv stuff.
AA5AU - You will want to check this site out if you are interested in rtty.

Links to some digital mode software

DXLab- this is a full suite of programs for logging and digital                         modes.
HamRadioDeluxe - Another full suite of programs.  Has extensive                                   digital modes.
MMTTY and MMSSTV -  For RTTY and  SSTV
MultiPSK - Allows to operate a lot of different modes.
DXatlas - a nice greyline program.
These are just a few of the programs available, but these are the ones I use.  Search the net and find the one you like best.

What I Use

My primary logging software is dxkeeper from the dxlab suite.  I like it because it has a lot of really nice features.  If you choose to give dxlab suite a try take some time to learn all the features and use each program in the suite, it will be worth it.  I also use ham radio deluxe and digital master 780.  I use it in conjunction with dxlab and it has worked really well for me.  My primary rtty software is mmtty.  I think it is the better one of the bunch for rtty.  I also take advantage of operating in FSK to use my radio's rtty filters.  I use mmsstv for sstv and multipsk for the modes not found in my other software.
